Sometimes, as much as we love thinking all things happen for a reason, and when they are supposed to happen, we run across this. A great reminder for us at Weswen Design on this busy, busy week!

Today’s question: how do you document your life?
When I first found out I was pregnant, I was thrilled/scared/nervous/excited/overjoyed. Throughout the first trimester, I was very unenthused to document my pregnancy’s trials and tribulations in a journal or Hallmark fill-in-the-blank book (SOOO not my style!) So, weeks went on and I had nothing recorded that I could look back on and remember major milestones of these nine crazy months.
One day, I woke up and decided that this was something I needed to be doing, not only for myself so I could remember when fun things started happening, but for my baby and my family as a keepsake to look back on years down the road. Of course the designer in me also said if I was going to do this, I was going to do it my way.
I decided it was important to keep a record of everyday occurrences—good and bad, milestones that I reached, and fun things that happened along the way.
I haven’t been good at recording EVERY week, but you get the idea…. and since I get to start with a blank page every week, nothing is off limits! Even inspiration boards I created for the nursery….. whatever I feel like will add to my memory of this process gets included .
I’ve decided to use Blurb.com to print this book once it’s complete. But for now, I have ten more weeks to document, maternity pictures to look forward to, and will of course finish it off with some adorable newborn pictures once our little angel arrives.
I’m SO glad I decided to start keeping track of all the fun (and not so fun!) milestones. I think it’s so important to document your life so you have something to look back on. In the age of digital pictures, it’s all too easy to upload them to your computer and just forget about them, but having something like a wedding album, a pregnancy book or photo album to hold in your hands to look back upon, is so important too. And, it’s a great way to be creative…. don’t feel like you have to do it a normal way either! Just have fun with it.
So, my friends, what do you do to document your life?
In our opinion, creativity isn’t something that’s learned, it’s innate. BUT, it takes a learned behavior to feel comfortable being creative and use it for good!
We’ll admit, sometimes our creative well gets dry and we need a little recharge to give us a boost. Here are some great tips on how you can stay creative and keep your inspiration flowing!
Hi friends! We’ve had a lot of good feedback from this post last week, so we wanted to add a few details to follow up to give your branding a boost from head to toe!
As we mentioned before, the first steps to successful branding, if you’re just starting out OR undergoing a re-brand, are to: create a logo, get business cards, and create a style guide with your colors and fonts which will be your guide in any future branding.
Today, it’s all about the importance of a printed marketing piece.
You may think that everyone is looking online for all their information. And the answer is that they are! However, as a business owner, it’s especially important to have some sort of printed brochure, postcard, flyer, etc. that you can hand to potential clients, or leave behind after a meeting to remind people how awesome you were. If someone picks up your brochure and then sees it lying around their house a week later, you will pop into their mind…. which is what you want.
Here is one of our favorite brochures we did for a catering client of ours. It’s not your typical, boring-sized brochure. In fact, we detest those! If you’re going to do something, this is when it’s time to pull out the thinking cap and come up with something fun, original, and that people will hold onto.
Doing a simple capabilities brochure and re-hashing everything you probably mentioned in your face-to-face meeting with them won’t be as successful as something that gives them a tip. Or something useful for them to use. The important thing to remember is that you have a skill-set, or product, that someone else needs…. so, how can you best highlight it to keep you in the forefront of their mind?
AND, it is essential that in any printed marketing materials you may do, that you be consistent with the brand you’ve created and make an easy transition from seeing your business card or website, to seeing something you hand them in person. All the pieces should flow and make one, cohesive set.
What branding questions do you have? Leave them in the comment section below and we will answer them in our blog this week!
Hi friends. A happy Friday, indeed. I’m ready for this week to end. It was action-packed though, with my first ambulance ride earlier in the week. The good news is that I am fine and so is the baby….. but people need to learn how to drive!
Sorry for the blog silence this week, but it’s Friday… which means I HAD to do a Font Friday post! And today’s pick is one of my favorites. It’s grungy, but not really grungy. It’s chunky and fun. It can be edgy, works well for kids and all-in-all, fabulous. Meet Block!
I love all the various faces since they all feel really different to me. It’s just such a fun font! You can purchase it here!

Have a happy weekend!
Happy May, friends! Today, we’re talking about brands. Not big brands like Coke and Nike, but little brands, like yourself :)
We often get the opportunity to work with small, start-up businesses here, and it’s such a joy to take what we know about brands and apply them to someone, who might not have anything established. It’s really such an important part of growing your business, that is, once you decide you’re actually going to be BE in business!
There is probably a formal definition out there somewhere, but at Weswen Design, our definition of brand is the elements that tie your business together. It’s the colors, fonts, images…. all the visual choices….. that work together to create one unified front that reminds your audience who you are on a consistent basis. Got that? Let’s break it down some.
All aboard the Branding 101 train!
Let’s say you’ve started a cupcake business. You have the name of your business, Frosting, and now you’re ready to move onto defining the elements in your brand. Disclaimer —–> of course there is tons of creativity out there and you can certainly venture down this path yourself, but it’s always wise to have a professional on your side to help guide you through the process to ensure your brand will be in tip-top shape when you’re done!
First stop, after naming your business: you need a logo. YES, you need a logo.
A logo gives your brand something to recognize it visually. It’s the icon that will (or should) appear over and over within all the other elements of your brand. Remember, a brand is tying together all these visual pieces into one, cohesive unit which allows your business maximum recognition. And, keep in mind, your logo should be CURRENT LOOKING. If you started your business five years ago and are thinking about re-branding…… we always advise to start at the beginning of the process. You may think your logo still stands the test of time, but look at it objectively and be honest with yourself. Should you have two logos? NO. Can you have one logo and then once it’s well-established start playing around with other ways to show it? Yes. But that’s not for beginners. One logo, kept the same, on all your marketing…. you’re one-third of the way there.
Next stop on the branding train: business cards.
You MUST HAVE a business card so people know where to contact you. Yes you can point them to your website, yes you can tell them your email, but you still need this little piece o’ paper to help you look legit. Again, it’s wise to bring a professional on board to help you create an impactful business card. And do your research! Know a budget you would be comfortable staying in. There are TONS of options today with business cards, and they can be as cheap or expensive as you’d like. Keep in mind, the more impressive your card, the more likely people are to remember you, but also, the more it shows your seriousness with your business. We aren’t advocates of spending tons of money, but we do think paper choices, size and printing methods play a key part in making this little 3.5 x 2 gem sparkle.
Finally, evaluate your colors and fonts and create a guide to help you with the rest of your branding and marketing.
A standards guide, even if it’s as simple as the example above, can really help you and the future of your business. This handy-dandy cheat sheet can be passed on to your designer and provides the information they need to continue to keep your brand unified and cohesive. Or, this guide can COME from your designer once they have completed your branding process so that you as the business owner know exactly what your options are moving forward. Sticking to a cheat sheet like this will only ensure that your brand will continue to be consistent in the future no matter what other marketing materials you create.
Thanks for riding our Branding 101 Train. And don’t mind our crude graphics as we whipped them up just for this post!
Tomorrow we’ll chat about other key items for a successful brand.
Happy Monday, lovelies!
This weekend, I spent a wonderful time at our house in the mountains. Yes, there’s nothing to do, and tons to do all at the same time. It’s definitely what you make of it. It was great to get away with just my Mama and be able to relax, reflect and prepare for the many crazy things that lie ahead (like a baby in 12 weeks!)
While we were out and about, there were a couple times when I found myself pressing the magic horn that apparently I thought I had accompanying me on the passenger side of the car. It’s so obvious, when you’re 2.5 hrs. outside of Washington, DC that drivers… well, they do not drive as they do here in the city. And, it can be rather annoying…….. but as the weekend went on, and I kept commenting “WHAT are they doing!?! Gas is on the RIGHT!” I had to stop myself and realize, patience my dear, patience.
Being that tomorrow is May 1st (seriously, where is the time going?!) I’m making a May goal for myself to be more in the moment. I’ve spent so much time preparing my business, and our life, for Baby’s arrival that my whole pregnancy has flown by in the blink of an eye. I’ve worked hard to design and launch the Maggie Collection, an Etsy shop and am continuing to network with (hopefully) new clients whom I can polish and make look pretty (their paper goods of course!) And, all the while, I’m so guilty of feeing like a failure when something doesn’t take off immediately. I find that I get down on myself, assume I’ve done it all for nothing, and move on to the next thing…. when, in reality, patience my dear, patience.
Good things take time to produce and once you plant the seeds, they need time to simmer and grow. You can only hope that the tree you plant today, will bare fruit tomorrow (or realistically sometime within the next several months) We live in a world where we expect instant results, and often give up or stop trying as hard once we don’t achieve what we think we should, in the timeframe we’ve established in our minds. But in reality, we need to view each little accomplishment on the path to our goals as a valued part of the process. We need to be able to look back and be proud of what we’ve achieved in order to look ahead at our “fruit tree” and realize it’s only a matter of time before the hard work/love/stress/tears/laughs/and “ughs” pay off.
And thanks lady, in your old, rusty Buick, who drove 15 miles under the speed limit this weekend, for making me realize this. It’s not always about the rush, but about the drive.
Happy Font Friday friends! I don’t know about you, but this week I needed a little font fun. It’s been a long week, so why not unwind with a little font game that has me completely addicted.
Meet I Shot the Serif! A genius game that any font loving person MUST play! Be warned: you WILL become addicted.
However, if you’re not in the know about your fonts, I’m here to help! Here’s a little diagram of what a serif font is, which is what you will want to shoot when you play the game. Remember, serif fonts contain letters that have the little “feet” on them. This should help before you dive in and test your knowledge and shooting skills.
And we want to hear what your high scores are! Report back and let us know how you did :)

Have a happy weekend!
I don’t know about you, but I have a little problem. It sits on my desk everyday and stares me in the face. You see, I have this lovely Julia Knight tray……
It really is quite beautiful. The problem is, it usually looks like THIS!
It’s my catch-all for anything paper related that crosses my desk. And it usually never looks better than the above pictures. My May goal is to keep the pile on this tray always looking lovely and unobtrusive. We’ll see how this goes. Can you relate?
